History
G Herbo made his name with dense, breathless storytelling over Chicago drill beats: long verses packed with names, places and memories, delivered in a raspy, urgent voice that rarely stops for a hook. He came up on the South Side of Chicago as Lil Herb, part of the same early 2010s wave as Chief Keef, but where much of drill leaned on chants and melody, he stood out as a lyricist. His work with Lil Bibby and a guest spot for Nicki Minaj on Chiraq raised his profile, and the mixtape Welcome to Fazoland, named after a friend who was killed, became one of the key records of the scene. After changing his name to G Herbo he released Humble Beast, a more polished statement that still kept the street detail. PTSD took its title from his own experience of trauma, and he spoke publicly about going to therapy, which was unusual in drill. A listener recognises G Herbo by the gravelly voice, the relentless flow that barely pauses for breath and verses that read like dense, painful memoirs of his neighbourhood.
