History
G-Dragon works as a rapper, singer and songwriter whose records rarely sit still inside one genre. As the leader of BIGBANG he shaped a Korean pop style that borrowed from hip hop, electro house, reggae and rock without treating any of them as a costume, and he wrote or co-wrote much of the group's catalogue rather than receiving finished songs from outside producers, which was uncommon in the industry at the time. His solo work pushes further. Heartbreaker is built on a blunt electro-house hook, One of a Kind swaggers over a sparse beat, and Crooked runs on distorted guitars closer to British rock than to anything else Korean pop was attempting then. His voice is nasal and slightly frayed, more personality than schooling, and he leans on that texture instead of hiding it. Fashion and visual direction always arrived as part of the package. A generation of Korean acts took from him the idea that the performer is responsible for the writing, not only the delivery.
