History

Fujii Kaze sings soul and gospel harmony in Japanese, usually from behind a piano, in a voice pitched as if he were talking to one person in the room. He started out posting piano covers online as a teenager, picking up Western pop and Japanese standards by ear, and that background is audible in how loosely he treats his own songs on stage, reharmonising and stretching them as he goes. The writing mixes English phrases and the dialect of his home region with lyrics about letting go and not taking the self too seriously. Shinunoga E-Wa is the one that travelled: a slow, sly love song whose chorus became a global short-video sound years after release and sent listeners with no Japanese at all back to the album. Matsuri is looser and more spiritual, Kirari the cleanest piece of funk-leaning pop he has written. What listeners recognise is the falsetto, dropped in casually mid-line instead of being saved for a climax.
