History

Fuerza Regida make corridos from the American side of the border, out of San Bernardino in California, and that vantage point is audible. The songs are in Spanish and built on the traditional instruments, requinto lines and a bass part carried by tuba or bajo, but the attitude and the subject matter come off the same streets as West Coast rap. The group belongs to the corridos tumbados wave that pushed regional Mexican music onto the main American album charts in the 2020s, with several of their records reaching the top ten of the Billboard 200. Bebe Dame, made with Grupo Frontera, travelled furthest, a slow cumbia-leaning break-up song. TQM and Sabor Fresa show the other side, closer to reggaeton phrasing and club tempo while the acoustic instruments still do the heavy lifting. The recognisable thing is the vocal: nasal, unpolished, conversational, saying a line about money and a line about a woman with the same flat certainty.
