History

Front Line Assembly play electro-industrial music built on cold, precise sequencer lines, distorted and processed vocals, sampled film dialogue and a hard, mechanical beat. The project was founded in Vancouver in 1986 by Bill Leeb, who had previously played with Skinny Puppy, and Vancouver's industrial scene shaped its early sound. Caustic Grip (1990) sharpened that sound into something aggressive and danceable, and Tactical Neural Implant (1992), with Rhys Fulber as Leeb's main partner, is widely seen as one of the defining electro-industrial albums: dense layers of synths, science-fiction atmosphere and tracks like Mindphaser that worked on dark dance floors. Millennium (1994) brought in heavy metal guitars and pushed the band toward industrial metal. Leeb and Fulber also ran several side projects, the best known being Delerium, which moved toward ambient and later melodic dance music. Front Line Assembly is recognised by its dystopian mood: arpeggiated basslines, filtered, shouted vocals, and a cinematic sense of machines at war.
