History
Frigg play Nordic fiddle music with the drive and looseness of bluegrass, a blend the world music press nicknamed nordgrass. Three fiddles usually lead, backed by guitar, mandolin or cittern and double bass, and the tunes swing between old dance forms such as polkas and waltzes and the quick, bright picking of American string bands. The group took its name from the goddess of Germanic mythology and started out as a Finnish-Norwegian band. The Finnish core comes from the Järvelä family of Kaustinen, a town at the heart of Finnish fiddle tradition, and over time the line-up became entirely Finnish while keeping a strong pan-Nordic character. The album Keidas set out the approach. Polka V in 2012 was chosen as the Finnish folk album of the year, and Frost on Fiddles in 2017 took the band into winter and seasonal material. Frigg have toured widely, playing folk festivals in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Celtic Connections. They are recognisable by tight fiddle unisons, bouncing rhythm and a warm, communal sound.
