History

Freemasons are an English production duo from Brighton who defined the glossy, disco-flavoured end of funky house in the mid 2000s. Their breakthrough, Love on My Mind (2005), set the template: a classic disco vocal sample reworked into a bright four-to-the-floor track with filtered strings, a rolling bassline and a big diva vocal from Amanda Wilson. The album Shakedown (2007) followed with more of the same polish, including Uninvited, a dance cover of Alanis Morissette with Bailey Tzuke, and the gospel-tinged Rain Down Love. Alongside their own records they became in-demand remixers for major pop and R&B acts, with their Beyoncé remixes among the best known, and they took that approach into chart pop rather than staying in club-only territory. The sound leans on warm piano stabs, lush strings and soaring female vocals, with the handclaps and sweeping filters of French and British house of the time. The result is an uplifting, radio-ready take on disco-based house, built for big rooms and summer playlists.
