History

Freddie Gibbs (born Fredrick Jamel Tipton, June 14, 1982) is an American rapper from Gary, Indiana, known for dense, technically precise street narratives delivered over both gritty trap and soulful sample-based production. After an early deal with Interscope Records fell apart in the mid-2000s, he rebuilt his profile through a run of independent mixtapes, including Str8 Killa No Filla and ESGN. His partnership with producer Madlib produced two widely acclaimed albums, Pinata (2014) and Bandana (2019), while his work with producer The Alchemist yielded Fetti (2018, with Curren$y), Alfredo (2020), and Alfredo 2 (2025). Alfredo earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. In 2022 he signed to Warner Records and released his major-label debut, Soul Sold Separately, which reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200. In early 2026, Gibbs won his first Grammy as a featured artist on Leon Thomas's Best R&B Album winner MUTT, becoming the first rapper from Gary, Indiana to take home the award, joining Michael and Janet Jackson among the city's Grammy-winning musicians.
