History
Fred Hammond fused gospel with funk, R&B and the energy of praise and worship, building a sound where a heavy groove and a massed choir serve the same purpose. A bassist and singer from Detroit, he first came to prominence as a member of Commissioned, the vocal group that brought a sleek, contemporary R&B polish to gospel in the 1980s. After leaving the group he launched a solo career and led the choir Radical for Christ, whose live recordings became central to his work. Songs like "No Weapon" became standards in churches across the United States. Pages of Life, Chapters I & II, a double album recorded partly live, captured the scale of his praise music, and Purpose by Design continued that mix of worship anthems and groove-based songs. Love Unstoppable, released in 2009, kept him at the centre of urban contemporary gospel. His role as producer and writer also shaped the sound of many other gospel artists. A listener recognises his music by the funky, bass-led rhythm sections, the call-and-response choir parts and his smooth, soulful lead voice guiding the praise.
