History
Fred again.. builds dance music out of fragments of other people's voices: a friend's voice note, a clip found online, a stranger talking about a bad night. The Actual Life albums treat those recordings as songs rather than samples, looping one phrase until it turns into a hook and putting house and garage drums under it that are softer and more slurred than club records usually allow. He spent years producing for other artists before the solo project, and that training shows in how carefully the records are mixed even at their messiest. Turn On the Lights again.. and Delilah (pull me out of this) make the emotional formula plain: a euphoric drop attached to something that sounds like grief. Rumble, made with Skrillex and Flowdan, goes the other way, hard and bass-led. Live sets around a laptop, a keyboard and a pad controller made him one of the biggest touring electronic acts of the 2020s, and the Grammy and Brit recognition followed.
