History
Fragma are a German dance project whose records sit where trance, house and pop meet, built around bright synth riffs and big vocal hooks. It was a producers' studio project rather than a band with a fixed frontperson. Its breakthrough came from an instrumental, "Toca Me", whose chiming, uplifting riff caught on in clubs. The follow-up, "Toca's Miracle", laid Coco Star's vocal from "I Need a Miracle" over that riff, first as a bootleg-style blend and then as an official release, and it became a number one in the UK in 2000. "Everytime You Need Me", with singer Maria Rubia, kept the same shape: a warm, sung chorus carried by a driving beat and a synth line that sticks after one listen. The album Toca gathered these singles into a set built for both clubs and radio. Fragma is recognisable by that bright, melodic lead riff, uplifting chord progressions, a steady pumping kick and a female vocal that turns the track into a song, a sound heard all over European dance radio around the turn of the millennium.
