History

Föllakzoid came out of Santiago, Chile, in 2007 and built its music on long, slowly mutating repetition: a locked groove of bass and drums, guitar reduced to a shimmering drone, and vocals treated as one more texture rather than a lead. Early on the sound sat close to desert and space rock, but each record stripped away more of the rock furniture. II, released in 2013 on Sacred Bones, set out the approach that made the group known outside South America, with tracks that stretch past ten minutes and build intensity by adding almost nothing. The band has linked this trance-like patience to Andean music as much as to German Krautrock. On III in 2015 the German electronic musician Uwe Schmidt, known as Atom TM, joined the process, and the music moved toward minimal techno, a path pushed further on I in 2019. Around that time Föllakzoid became the solo project of Domingæ Garcia Huidobro, who relocated to Mexico City. A listener recognises it by the hypnotic pulse and the feeling of a rock band slowly dissolving into a machine.
