History

Flo Rida built a career on the club single rather than the album, and treated the hook as the whole point. The Miami rapper works at a tempo closer to dance music than to hip-hop, delivers verses in short, punchy blocks that never crowd the chorus, and hands the biggest melody to a guest or a sample. Low, cut with T-Pain, spent a long run at the top of the American chart and became one of the best-selling digital singles ever released, largely on the strength of a two-line refrain anyone could repeat after one hearing. Right Round rebuilt an eighties synth-pop chorus into a club record, and Wild Ones paired his verses with Sia's soaring topline, a formula he reused often and openly. The production leans on huge four-on-the-floor kicks, bright synth stabs and vocal chants sized for arenas. What a listener recognises is the structure: almost no introduction, a chorus within seconds, and verses that exist mainly to get back to it.
