History

Flatt & Scruggs took the bluegrass sound out of Bill Monroe's band and carried it to the widest audience the genre had yet reached. Lester Flatt, a guitarist and warm lead singer, and Earl Scruggs, whose three-finger banjo roll changed the instrument for good, both played in Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in the mid-1940s and left in 1948 to form their own group, the Foggy Mountain Boys. Flatt's relaxed vocals and his signature guitar run balanced Scruggs's rapid, rolling banjo, and the band's recordings set a template that countless pickers learned note for note. Foggy Mountain Breakdown became their best known instrumental and later reached film audiences through Bonnie and Clyde, while The Ballad of Jed Clampett, the theme of The Beverly Hillbillies, brought them into American living rooms. Albums such as Foggy Mountain Jamboree and Foggy Mountain Banjo remain core listening. The partnership ended in 1969. Their sound is easy to spot: cascading banjo rolls, Flatt's easy, steady voice and a clean, polished band sound.
