History

FISHER made tech house a main-stage sound by cutting it down to the parts that physically move a crowd: a rubbery, elastic bassline, drums with a heavy swing, and one vocal phrase repeated until it works like a punchline. The Australian producer came into dance music from competitive surfing, and the showmanship came with him, so the sets read as loud and funny rather than studious. Losing It was the record that broke it all open, riding a single squealing riff far longer than a producer is supposed to before letting it go, and it carried the track from club rooms to festival headline slots and a Grammy nomination in the dance category. Take It Off and Stop It follow the same logic, a chant or a spoken line looped until repetition turns it into a hook. The early releases sat in the Dirtybird orbit, a scene that always valued humour and low-end weight over polish. What a listener recognises is the emptiness of the arrangement: very few elements, each one enormous, and a drop that lands later than the ear expects.
