History

Born in Varna in 1967 to Bedros Kirkorov, a Bulgarian singer who spent much of his career working in the USSR, Kirkorov trained at the Gnessin school in Moscow and built the loudest-dressed act in Russian estrada. Zayka moya (1995) is the one that stuck: a simple melody, an enormous arrangement, and a delivery aimed at the back row of a sports arena. Atlantida and Yedinstvennaya are built the same way. The records favour full orchestral backing, a key change before the last chorus and a backing choir; the shows favour costume changes, dancers and lighting on a scale few of his contemporaries could fund. He represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995, and was married to Alla Pugacheva from 1994 to 2005, a decade in which the two of them sat at the centre of Russian pop. Since then he has kept recording and touring as a showman rather than a writer, performing material written for him by others.
