History

Faktor 2 made music for the courtyard rather than for the radio, and the courtyard made them one of the most heard Russian acts of the middle 2000s. The formula is simple and hard to fake: acoustic guitar figures, a plain drum machine, verses half sung and half spoken in an ordinary unschooled voice, and lyrics about girls, fights, army service and the local street told without any literary distance. Krasavitsa is the song almost everyone knows, a sentimental chorus that spread through mobile phones, market stalls and car stereos long before it was anywhere near a playlist. Voyna sits at the serious end, closer to the soldier songs Russian listeners already carried around, while other tracks are deliberately crude and funny. Critics mostly refused to take the duo seriously, which changed nothing about how widely the songs travelled. What they captured is a particular late post-Soviet tone, sentimental and coarse in the same verse, sung by someone who sounds like a neighbour.
