History
Faith No More formed in San Francisco in 1979, growing out of an earlier lineup called Faith No Man. Bassist Billy Gould, keyboardist Roddy Bottum, and drummer Mike Bordin were the band's constant core, later joined by guitarist Jim Martin and, in 1989, vocalist Mike Patton. The band pioneered a genre-blurring sound that fused funk, metal, hip-hop, and alternative rock, helping lay the groundwork for the 1990s funk-metal and nu-metal movements. Their 1989 album The Real Thing broke through commercially on the strength of the single "Epic," whose MTV video (and a flopping-fish clip) became inescapable and turned Patton into a household name almost overnight. The 1992 follow-up, Angel Dust, is now widely regarded as one of the most inventive rock records of its decade, though it marked Jim Martin's final album with the band. After King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime and Album of the Year, Faith No More split in 1998, reunited for touring from 2009, and released a comeback album, Sol Invictus, in 2015 before going quiet again.
