History
Esperanza Spalding is a jazz bassist, vocalist, and composer born October 18, 1984, in Portland, Oregon. After picking up violin as a child and switching to acoustic bass as a teenager, she studied at Berklee College of Music, graduating in 2005 and becoming one of the school's youngest-ever instructors at age 20. Her sound blends jazz with funk, hip-hop, and Brazilian and Argentine folk influences, often sung in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Her self-titled 2008 album Esperanza topped Billboard's contemporary jazz chart, and 2010's Chamber Music Society made her the world's bestselling contemporary jazz artist. In 2011 she became the first jazz musician ever to win the Grammy for Best New Artist, beating pop acts like Justin Bieber and Drake. She has since won four Grammy Awards total, including Best Jazz Vocal Album for Radio Music Society (2012) and Songwrights Apothecary Lab (2022), performed at the White House and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, and became a Harvard professor in 2017.
