History

Esma Redžepova sang Romani songs with a big, bright, ornamented voice that carried the sound of Skopje's Roma community to stages across Yugoslavia and far beyond. Known widely as the Queen of Romani music, she built her career together with the accordionist and bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, who became her husband and shaped the ensemble around her. Her repertoire mixed wedding dances, laments and fast Balkan rhythms in odd meters, driven by accordion, clarinet, brass and hand drums, and her delivery moved easily from playful to grieving. Songs such as Čaje Šukarije became standards of the genre. She was also known off stage: the couple took in and raised dozens of children, and her humanitarian work made her a public figure in North Macedonia. Late in her career she appeared at Eurovision in 2013 for Macedonia alongside Vlatko Lozanoski. Collections like Songs of a Macedonian Gypsy brought her to world music audiences. Listeners know her by the soaring melismatic lines, the dance pulse and a stage presence that treated Romani identity with pride.
