History
Ensiferum play folk metal on an epic scale: fast melodic death riffs, galloping drums, massed choirs and folk melodies that sound like old Nordic dances turned up to full volume. The band formed in Helsinki in the mid-1990s around guitarist Markus Toivonen, and the name comes from Latin for sword-bearing, which fits the battle and heroism themes that run through their lyrics. The self-titled debut and Iron defined the early sound, with harsh vocals from Jari Mäenpää set against soaring clean choruses; after his departure to focus on Wintersun, Victory Songs carried the approach forward with a new frontman and an even bigger, more cinematic production. Ensiferum songs are recognisable by their shouted gang refrains, acoustic intros, fiddle and kantele-like lines, and long multi-part tracks that move from campfire folk to full-speed metal. Together with other Finnish acts of the same years they helped turn folk metal from a niche into a festival staple, and their records remain a common starting point for listeners discovering the Viking side of the genre.
