History
Ellen Allien made Berlin techno sound personal. A DJ and producer shaped by the city's club scene after the fall of the Wall, she founded the label BPitch Control in the late 1990s and used it both for her own records and to launch other artists, with Apparat and Paul Kalkbrenner among the names associated with it. Her music mixes techno with electro, minimal and pop sensibility: clipped drum machines, squelching synths and her own voice, often half-spoken, sometimes in German. Stadtkind in 2001, whose title means city child, was a love letter to Berlin, and Berlinette in 2003 carried the theme further with a cooler, more electronic-pop edge. Thrills in 2005 pushed toward a sharper club sound, and in 2006 she released the collaborative album Orchestra of Bubbles with Apparat. Throughout, she has kept DJing as the centre of her work. Listeners recognise her records by their playfulness, the mix of warmth and machine precision, and a sense that the tracks are about a specific place and the people who move through it at night.
