History
Éliane Radigue is a French composer whose music is made of long, slowly shifting tones: sustained drones in which beating frequencies, overtones and tiny changes in timbre unfold so gradually that a listener hears them only by settling into the sound. She started in the orbit of musique concrète, working with Pierre Schaeffer and as an assistant to Pierre Henry, and early on explored feedback between microphones and tape. Her defining instrument became the ARP 2500 modular synthesizer, which she used for decades together with tape to build pieces lasting an hour or more. Adnos from 1974 is one of the key works of that period. Her practice of Tibetan Buddhism shaped much of her later electronic output, above all Trilogie de la Mort, released in 1998, a three-part meditation on death and transition. Later in her career she left synthesizers behind and began writing for acoustic instruments, developing pieces directly with individual performers, most notably the long series Occam Ocean. She is recognised by sound that seems almost still yet is never static.
