History

El-B made some of the darkest records in UK garage, and those records are now heard as a direct ancestor of dubstep. Working out of London at the turn of the millennium, he took the shuffling two-step rhythm and stripped away the polish: moody sub-bass, sparse snares that land off the grid, eerie chords and a sense of space that most garage of the time avoided. Tracks such as Buck & Bury and Back2Me circulated among DJs who wanted something rougher than the chart-bound side of the scene. His work with the Ghost production outfit is part of the same story. When dubstep took shape in Croydon and South London a few years later, producers there openly drew on this strain of garage, and Tempa gathered his material on the retrospective The Roots of El-B in 2009, framing him as one of the sources. A listener recognises El-B by swung, skippy drums over rolling bass, minor-key stabs and a nocturnal, slightly menacing mood that still feels built for a dancefloor.
