History
Eduard Khil (1934-2012) trained as an academic singer at the Leningrad Conservatory and carried that schooling onto the estrada stage: a bright baritone placed well forward, clean legato, no crooning. His repertoire leaned toward marching tempos and songs about leaving and working, delivered with a broad smile that became as much his signature as the voice. The best-known of them, «Как провожают пароходы» (1966), was written by Arkady Ostrovsky. The strangest item in the catalogue is a 1976 television vocalise, also by Ostrovsky, sung entirely without words, on syllables. In 2010 a clip of it spread online as Trololo and made Khil, then in his seventies, familiar to an audience that had never heard of him. He kept performing in Saint Petersburg almost to the end of his life. The sound behind him is a full studio orchestra with brass and strings, a baritone sitting high and out in front, and phrasing that pushes ahead rather than lingers.
