History

Drexciya made electro into a mythology. The Detroit duo of James Stinson and Gerald Donald wrapped their music in an Afrofuturist story about an underwater nation descended from the children of pregnant African women thrown overboard during the transatlantic slave trade, who had adapted to breathe in the sea. Track titles, sleeve notes and album concepts built out that world, while the two members stayed deliberately anonymous, avoiding photos and interviews. The sound is raw and aquatic: rubbery, fast electro bass lines, clipped 808 drums, cold synth melodies and hissing textures. Their early releases came in the orbit of Underground Resistance, and later albums such as Neptune's Lair in 1999 and Harnessed the Storm in 2002 appeared on the Berlin label Tresor, with the Grava 4 album following the same year. Stinson's death in 2002 ended the project, but its influence on electro and experimental techno has only grown. A listener recognises Drexciya by the fierce, liquid bass and the sense of a hidden world beneath the music.
