History

Dobie Gray had a smooth, warm baritone that could sound effortless over a driving dance beat or a slow, reflective ballad. He came out of Texas and moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, and his breakthrough came in 1965 with The 'In' Crowd, a finger-snapping song about being at the centre of the fashionable set that became a sizable pop hit. The following year he recorded Out on the Floor, which did little in America at the time but was later taken up by the DJs and dancers of the Northern Soul scene in England, where it became one of the most loved records on the circuit. His best-known song came in 1973 with Drift Away, a gentle, gospel-tinged soul rock number about music as a refuge, which became a lasting radio standard. In later years Gray worked in Nashville, writing and recording with a country audience in mind. He is easy to recognise by that easy, unforced voice, the uptempo stomp of his Northern Soul sides, and the relaxed warmth of Drift Away.
