History

DJ Zinc is the London producer who helped define jump-up jungle in the mid-1990s and then kept moving into new club sounds. He worked his way from hardcore through ragga and hardstep, and his 1995 track Super Sharp Shooter became one of the anthems of the era: a hip-hop sample, a stuttering break and a bassline that dropped with the force of a punchline. It is still one of the clearest examples of jungle borrowing hip-hop swagger. Through the late 1990s he worked closely with DJ Hype in the Ganja Kru and True Playaz crews. In 2000 he changed lanes with 138 Trek, a tougher, garage-leaning breakbeat track that reached number 27 in the UK singles chart and crossed over to the 2-step crowd. He ran the Bingo Beats label and, after stepping back from drum and bass in 2007, developed what he called crack house, a blend of deep, funky and fidget house. Wile Out with Ms Dynamite reached the UK top 40 in 2010. His signature is punchy drums, cheeky samples and basslines built as the hook.
