History

DJ Rashad was one of the defining producers of Chicago footwork, the fast, jittery dance music that grew out of juke and ghetto house around 160 beats per minute. Rashad Harden came up in Chicago's battle-dance scene, where tracks were built for dancers, and with DJ Spinn and others he formed the Teklife crew that carried the style from local battles to international stages. His productions stack skittering triplet kicks and snares, chopped and looped vocal fragments and deep 808 bass, but he also brought in soul, jazz and hip-hop samples and, increasingly, the chopped breakbeats and rolling bass of jungle and drum and bass. That fusion is at its clearest on Double Cup, his album for Hyperdub, which introduced footwork to a far wider audience and showed how close its rhythms could sit to UK rave music. The Teklife Volume 1 release captured the crew's sound in the same period. Rashad died in 2014, at the height of his influence, just as the wider world was catching up with the style he had helped shape. His tracks remain the reference point for footwork crossed with jungle.
