History
DJ Hype is the London DJ and producer whose fast mixing, scratching and taste for rowdy basslines shaped the jump-up side of jungle. He started in the early 1980s with the Heatwave sound system in south London, the circle that also produced Shut Up and Dance, and by the late 1980s was producing for labels such as Kickin', Strictly Underground and Suburban Base. Shot in the Dark, released in 1993, reached the UK singles chart and caught the moment when breakbeat hardcore was turning into jungle. Hype then founded Ganja Records, whose releases helped define the tougher, hip-hop-minded end of the sound, and formed True Playaz with DJ Zinc, Pascal and MC Rude Bwoy Monty as a combined DJ, MC and production crew. The compilation Still Smokin' in 1996 gathered that era. He was heard on pirate station Fantasy FM and later on Kiss, and his Playaz nights at Fabric became a fixture. Behind the decks he is known for quick cuts, turntable tricks borrowed from hip-hop and sets that stay loud and physical.
