History

DJ BoBo is the Swiss end of 1990s eurodance, and he kept the format cleaner than almost anyone working in it. The parts are fixed: a four-on-the-floor kick around 135 beats per minute, a bright synth line carrying the melody, rapped verses in accented English and a sung female chorus placed exactly where the dancefloor expects it. Somebody Dance with Me borrows its melody from 1980s French synth pop and turns it into a hands-in-the-air chorus. Freedom slows the same machinery down enough to make room for a ballad structure. Chihuahua went the other way into pure novelty, and it became the song most of Europe can hum whether or not it wanted to. The productions are loud, glossy and unembarrassed, built for radio and for the kind of arena show that comes with dancers and costume changes. He also represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest. In Russia and across eastern Europe his records stayed on dancefloors long after western radio moved on.
