History

Dismember played Swedish death metal at its most melodic and most violent at once. Formed in Stockholm in 1988, the band came out of the same small scene as Entombed and helped fix its sound: guitars tuned low and pushed through a heavily distorted, buzzing tone, fast d-beat drumming, and riffs that kept breaking into twin-guitar harmony lines closer to classic heavy metal than to American death metal. Their debut "Like an Ever Flowing Stream" is regarded as one of the defining records of the style, and one of its tracks prompted an obscenity charge in the United Kingdom, which the band successfully defended. "Indecent and Obscene" and "Massive Killing Capacity" leaned harder into melody and groove while keeping the aggression. Along with Entombed, Grave and Unleashed, Dismember is counted among the big four of Swedish death metal. The group split in 2011 after more than two decades and later reunited for live shows. The band is easy to pick out by the saw-toothed guitar sound, the galloping tempos and the harmonised leads that give the brutality a strange, mournful lift.
