History

Two brothers from Surrey, Guy and Howard Lawrence, started posting tracks online around 2010 while both were still teenagers. Their early singles leaned on chopped vocal samples and the shuffled two-step swing of UK garage, a sound most British clubs had left behind a decade earlier. Latch, released in 2012, introduced an unknown Sam Smith and kept climbing for years afterwards. Settle followed in June 2013 and went to number one in the UK, with White Noise and When a Fire Starts to Burn pulling the album onto radio. Guy builds most of the tracks and plays drums, Howard plays bass and sings. Caracal arrived in 2015 with Lorde, The Weeknd and Gregory Porter among the guests, trading some of the garage skip for slower, darker house. What other producers took from the pair was the method: a vocal cut into syllables, a bassline with room around it, and a kick that never sits square on the grid.
