History
Dimash Kudaibergen sings across a range most listeners have never heard in a single voice, moving from a low chest register up through a clean falsetto and into whistle notes without an audible seam. He trained in Kazakhstan in both classical singing and the Kazakh traditional repertoire, and that double schooling explains the technique: operatic breath support underneath, folk ornamentation on top. He became widely known outside Central Asia through the Chinese television show Singer, where his performance of S.O.S. d'un terrien en détresse reached far beyond the programme's usual audience, and he has held a very large following in China and across the Russian speaking world since. His own material leans towards dramatic, heavily orchestrated ballads sung in Kazakh, Russian, English, Mandarin and French. A listener recognises the sheer altitude of the top notes and the control that keeps them from sounding like a stunt.
