History
Deuter built his sound on long, unhurried pieces in which flute, sitar, acoustic guitar, piano and synthesizer drift together with recordings of water and birdsong. The German multi-instrumentalist released his debut album D in 1971 on the Kuckuck label, a record that sat between krautrock experiment and something calmer, mixing acoustic, electronic and non-Western sounds. It is often named among the first steps toward what later became new age music. Time in Pune, India, where he studied with the guru Rajneesh and took the name Chaitanya Hari, turned that experiment into music meant to accompany meditation. Ecstasy from 1979 shows the shift clearly: soft melodic lines float over sustained drones with no pulse to follow. In the 1990s he moved to Santa Fe and began releasing on New Earth Records, and later albums such as Nada Himalaya lean on Tibetan singing bowls and bells. Across more than sixty albums the traits stay steady: gentle attack, slow harmonic movement, acoustic instruments used as colour rather than lead, and almost no drums or tension.
