History
Despised Icon are one of the bands credited with shaping deathcore, fusing technical death metal speed and precision with the groove, gang vocals and breakdowns of hardcore. They formed in Montreal, Quebec, in 2002 and stood out early for a two-vocalist attack: Alex Erian and Steve Marois trade lines between deep growls, pig squeals and hardcore shouts, which gives the songs a constant back-and-forth energy. The Ills of Modern Man in 2007 and Day of Mourning in 2009 are the records most often cited for their sound: fast blast-beat sections that snap into slow, heavy breakdowns, dense riffing and short, violent songs. The band split in 2010, a moment that marked the end of the first deathcore wave for many listeners, then reunited a few years later and returned with Beast in 2016, which showed the same approach undiminished. Coming from Quebec's strong extreme metal scene gave them a technical edge that many deathcore bands lacked. Despised Icon are easy to identify by the dual vocals, the jarring switches between speed and weight and a raw hardcore attitude underneath the death metal technique.
