History

Dennis Coffey is a Detroit guitarist whose wah-wah pedal, fuzz and sharp rhythm playing ran through much of the city's soul and funk in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a session player at Motown he worked alongside the studio musicians known as the Funk Brothers, and his guitar can be heard on psychedelic soul records by the Temptations such as 'Cloud Nine' and 'Ball of Confusion'. He also co-produced Rodriguez's album Cold Fact with Mike Theodore. Under his own name he broke through in 1971 with the instrumental 'Scorpio', a driving track built on a heavy drum break, bass and his effects-laden guitar, which became a hit and later a staple for breakdancers and hip-hop DJs. Albums such as Evolution and Goin' for Myself set his guitar against horns, strings and tight studio rhythm sections. Listeners recognise his sound by the treated guitar tone, the tension between rock distortion and funk groove, and long percussion breaks made for the dancefloor.
