History

Demo (Демо) is a Russian pop group formed in Moscow in 1999 by producers Vadim Polyakov and Dmitri Postovalov, built around teenage vocalist Alexandra (Sasha) Zvereva. The band's first public show, on 26 April 1999 at Moscow's MDM venue, is treated as its official birthday. Alongside Zvereva, the early lineup featured dancers who performed choreography on stage — first Maria Zheleznyakova and Danila Polyakov, later replaced by Anna Zaytseva (from the Todes troupe) and Pavel Penyayev (Duncan ballet), a common format for Russian pop acts of the era. Demo's sound was upbeat, radio-friendly technopop/dance-pop aimed at teenagers. Its breakout singles "Solnyshko" and "2000 let" (both 1999) became era-defining hits, followed by "Vyshe neba" (2001) and "Dozhdik" (2002), the group's last major chart success. The band won a Golden Gramophone award and two "Song of the Year" prizes. Zvereva remained the voice of Demo for twelve years, until a 2011 lineup change; Postovalov left in 2002 and rejoined in 2018.
