History
Demis Roussos sang in a high, fluttering tenor that sat somewhere between a pop crooner and a cantor, and that voice is the whole signature. He grew up in Alexandria in a Greek family and moved to Greece as a young man, and his first fame came with Aphrodite's Child, the psychedelic group he formed with Vangelis before the two went their own ways. Solo he turned to lush orchestral ballads: strings, mandolin and bouzouki colour, slow tempos, melodies that lean on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern phrasing rather than on Anglo-American pop. Forever and Ever and Goodbye My Love, Goodbye made him one of the best selling singers in Europe during the seventies, and in the Soviet Union he was enormous, played on radio and copied onto tape long before the records could be bought legally. The look, kaftan and beard, became as recognisable as the vibrato, and the vibrato is what a listener still identifies him by.
