History
Deize Tigrona is a funk carioca MC from São Conrado in Rio de Janeiro whose voice travelled much further than the bailes where it was first heard. Before music took over she worked as a house cleaner, and she emerged in the early 2000s as one of the women of Rio funk who answered the genre's male bravado with lyrics of their own, frank, funny and full of double meanings about sex and desire. Her best known track, Injeção, is built on sexual metaphor and a sample of the theme from the Rocky films, set over the rough, booming drum machine beat of the baile. That song became the basis for M.I.A.'s Bucky Done Gun, which carried Rio funk to an international audience, and Tigrona went on to perform alongside M.I.A. and fellow funk artist Tati Quebra Barraco. After several years away from music, she returned to the stage in the 2010s. A listener recognises Deize Tigrona by the loud, raw, floor-shaking beats, the teasing delivery and the double entendres that sit at the heart of classic funk carioca.
