History
DeepChord is the project of Detroit producer Rod Modell, and its sound is dub techno at its most submerged: muffled chords echoing through long delay trails, soft kick drums, hiss and field-recorded atmosphere, all blurred until the groove feels like weather more than a beat. It began in the mid-1990s as a collaboration with Mike Schommer before becoming Modell's own vehicle. The music joins two traditions, the minimal dub techno associated with Berlin and the deeper techno lineage of Detroit, and stretches from full dancefloor tracks to almost beatless ambient. With Stephen Hitchell, known as Soultek, Modell also worked as Echospace and cv313, and The Coldest Season, released in 2007 on Modern Love under the DeepChord presents Echospace name, became a touchstone for the wintry, heavily textured side of the genre. Later albums came out on Soma and other labels, including Liumin, Hash-Bar Loops and Auratones. A listener recognises DeepChord by the chord stab that never quite resolves, the tape-like haze wrapped around every sound and a pulse that stays steady while everything around it dissolves.
