History

Death Grips sit closer to industrial noise than to any recognisable rap lineage, and the discomfort is engineered rather than incidental. The drums are played live and mixed as loud as the vocals, which leaves no air in the stereo field, the synths are distorted past the point of pitch, and MC Ride delivers almost everything at a scream with no variation in level. The group formed in Sacramento and moved fast: a free mixtape, then The Money Store, which is where most listeners start, because the hooks survive the assault. 'Get Got' and 'Guillotine' work as songs even at that volume. Their history with the industry was short and adversarial, including an album put out against a label's wishes and a run of cancelled shows, and that antagonism became part of how the project gets read. The recognisable thing is the mix itself: everything clipped, nothing given room, a wall that turns out on repeat listening to have been carefully arranged.
