History

Deafheaven fuse black metal intensity with the swell and release of post-rock and shoegaze: shrieked vocals and blast beats sit under bright, major-key guitar melodies that build into long, cathartic climaxes. The band formed in San Francisco in 2010 around vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. Their second album Sunbather, released in 2013 with its famous pink cover, became one of the most widely praised records of that year and reached far beyond the metal audience, while also starting heated arguments among purists about what black metal was allowed to sound like. New Bermuda in 2015 was heavier and more jagged, and Ordinary Corrupt Human Love in 2018 opened up further with piano, clean passages and warmer guitar tones. Infinite Granite in 2021 moved even closer to dream pop, with mostly clean singing. Deafheaven are recognised by their emotional peaks, shimmering tremolo guitars, Clarke's raw scream against sunlit melodies and songs that stretch past the ten-minute mark without losing tension.
