History

Deaf Center make slow, dark ambient music where bowed strings, heavy drones and sparse piano sit inside a haze of hiss and reverb. The project is a Norwegian duo of Erik K. Skodvin and Otto A. Totland, who started working together in the early 2000s. Their debut album Pale Ravine (2005) set the template: long, cinematic pieces that feel like film scores for scenes that never happen, with cello-like tones and processed field sounds drifting under fragile melodies. Owl Splinters (2011) came after a long gap and is sparer and more tense, balancing Totland's quiet piano against Skodvin's grinding, blackened textures. Both members are known for their other work as well: Skodvin records as Svarte Greiner and under his own name, while Totland has released solo piano music. Deaf Center sit in the wider scene of modern classical and cinematic ambient that grew in the 2000s, but with a colder, more ominous Nordic tone. A listener recognises them by the contrast between delicate piano and dense, murky low end, and by a mood that stays unsettled rather than soothing.
