History

Dave writes in long paragraphs. The South London rapper builds verses that run past the usual bar count and land like chapters, and he often plays the piano underneath them himself, which gives the records a chamber quality unusual in British rap. Psychodrama is structured as a course of therapy sessions, with the music thinning out wherever the writing needs the room, and it took the Mercury Prize in 2019. His range is wider than that suggests. 'Funky Friday' is a straight club record, 'Location' leans on Afrobeats with Burna Boy on the hook, and 'Starlight' rides a light, almost weightless loop. What stays constant is the voice: unhurried, low, more concerned with being understood than with sounding impressive. He grew up in Streatham in a family with Nigerian roots, and the specifics of that London, its streets, its households and its courtrooms, get named directly rather than gestured at. A listener recognises him by the pause he leaves before the line that matters.
