History
Dan + Shay built their sound on big, polished pop melodies set in a country frame: acoustic guitars and steel on the surface, but choruses written like pop ballads and carried by soaring, close harmony. The duo is Dan Smyers, the producer and multi-instrumentalist, and Shay Mooney, the singer with the wide tenor range, who teamed up in Nashville in the early 2010s and signed with Warner Music Nashville. Where It All Began and Obsessed established the formula of romantic, wedding-ready songs, and their self-titled album delivered "Tequila", which won them a Grammy and became one of the defining country crossover hits of the late 2010s. Their collaboration with Justin Bieber on "10,000 Hours" pushed them further into the pop mainstream. Smyers produces much of their work himself, which keeps the sound consistent: glossy, spacious and built around the vocal. The giveaways are Mooney's high, sustained notes, the stacked two-part harmonies and lyrics that almost always tell a love story.
