History

DakhaBrakha take Ukrainian village songs and rebuild them into something hypnotic and strange, a sound the members themselves call ethno chaos. The quartet formed in Kyiv in 2004 at the DAKH theatre under director Vladyslav Troitskyi, and theatre is still in the bones of the act: stark staging, tall black lambskin hats and white costumes, and songs that unfold like scenes. Three women sing in the piercing, open-throated style of rural polyphony, while the instrumentation reaches far beyond Ukraine: cello played like a bass or drum, djembe and other hand percussion, accordion, didgeridoo, keys. Repetition is the engine, with a simple folk phrase looped and layered until it turns into trance. Albums such as Light and The Road built an international audience, and a performance for NPR's Tiny Desk and appearances at large festivals, including Glastonbury, made them one of the best-known Ukrainian acts abroad. Since 2022 their concerts have also carried an openly political charge. Listeners recognise them by those high, bright voices over a pounding, cello-driven pulse.
