History

Cupsize started as a home experiment somewhere between hip-hop and hyperpop and grew into a loud, guitar-driven band. The project was founded in Yaroslavl in 2020 by Nikolai Mamaev, and its first EPs, Throw Up and Цветофобия, sat much closer to rap and hyperpop than to rock. The breakthrough came in January 2023 with an album whose title cannot be printed uncensored under Russian law. It moved the sound toward grunge and alternative rock, and its blunt, provocative lyrics about marginal lives spread across the internet fast. One later release set a record for pre-saves, and the band went on tour to cities such as Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don. The same notoriety brought trouble: after a complaint from the head of the Safe Internet League, a Yaroslavl court fined Mamaev in January 2024 for drug propaganda, and the album was pulled from most Russian streaming services. The band kept playing and releasing music, and in 2025 shared a festival stage with OG Buda and Mayot. Cupsize is recognised by distorted guitars, deadpan delivery and jokes that sit right on the edge of what is allowed.
