History

Cultura Profética play a warm, musicianly roots reggae that stands apart from the reggaeton that dominates their home island. The band formed in Puerto Rico in the mid-1990s, and bassist and singer Willy Rodríguez became its best known voice. Their songs keep the classic reggae engine of one drop drums and offbeat guitar but open it up with jazz-tinged chords, live horns, Latin percussion and long instrumental passages that come from a band that clearly enjoys playing together. Lyrics move between tender love songs and pointed comments on politics, colonial status and everyday life in the Caribbean. Canción de alerta introduced them, M.O.T.A. widened their audience across Latin America, and La dulzura, with songs such as "La complicidad", became one of the most loved Spanish-language reggae records of its time. Cultura Profética are recognised by the unhurried grooves, Rodríguez's soft, intimate singing and an independence of spirit that made them a reference point for reggae en español across the region.
