History
Cross Canadian Ragweed played Red Dirt country the way a garage rock band would: loud, electric and built for crowded bars. The band came together in Yukon, Oklahoma, in the 1990s, and its name stitches together the surnames of its founders, Grady Cross, Cody Canada and Randy Ragsdale, with Jeremy Plato on bass. They moved to Stillwater and joined the scene around its clubs, playing constantly across Oklahoma and Texas and building a following long before any label support. Cody Canada's raspy voice and the band's crunchy guitars pushed the sound toward Southern rock and heartland rock, while the songs stayed rooted in small-town life, friendship, drinking and restlessness. A major-label deal brought wider exposure in the mid-2000s with Soul Gravy, followed by Garage and Mission California, the last of which leaned harder into rock. The band broke up in 2010, and Canada went on to lead The Departed. Listeners recognise Cross Canadian Ragweed by the barroom energy, the twin pull of country storytelling and distorted guitar, and a live feel that their studio records tried to capture.
